I sound like you missed a large part of the game. Here is a walkthrough:
Explore to find some gold to buy a key to the mausoleum from the blacksmith. Enter the mausoleum and push a table to the right. Go downstairs. In the catacombs you will find an urn in the wall. Take it. Find a large puddle of slimy water and fill the urn (equip the urn and use it while standing by the puddle. Find a blue rock nearby and use the water in the urn to make the floor slippery enough to move the rock to the left. Find a room with many barrels. Smash some barrels to reveal a hidden stairway. Go down and explore. Be sure to find a flute on the wall down there. After finished exploring, go back up and find a pillbug. After defeating it, collect the 'Sword of Lorimax'.
After exiting the mausoleum, find a statue head. Hit it with the sword and some fire will vanish. You can now go south. A guy tells you that someone knows some magic words. Go find this guy near the waterfall. Once you know the magic words, "talk" to a dragon statue. You will say the magic words and be warped to the canyon of storms. You will be able to warp back and forth from now on by talking to the dragon statues. Go east until you find the Peaceful Oasis. Talk to a guy inside a building. Talk to a crab. Talk to the guy again. Now you can go north to visit the shrine of the goddess. There are some stairs that lead to the right and some that lead to the left. Go left and read some excerpts from a book shelf. Now go back to the Canyon of storms and find a broken savebot machine. Hit it 6 times and push it to the south. Go down and talk to a rodent. It will teach you a song. Now go back to the shrine and take the stairs to the right. Stand in the middle between four rocks. Equip and use the flute you found in the catacombs. You will play the tune that the rodent taught you and a door will open for you. Enter it and talk to the goddess. Collect the 'Tears of the goddess' magic. Now return to the first dragon statue you saw and there are some volcanic rocks. Use the tears of the goddess magic to soften them and then smash them either with your fists or the sword after a few hits.
Now find a cave. There is a wizard who will remove a duck statue that blocks your way. First you must get someone to make a dmod. Then return and the wizard will remove the duck statue. Go down. Find 2 little statues and hit them both. One will make a gate open and the other will make a ladder appear. Now you can enter that building. Find a pillbug and kill it. Collect the "wrath of the Abomination" magic and leave.
Now you will be able to burn some very dry-looking trees. Go south and then east. Soon you will find the orb.
