Well, you can always start small (just do a little demo size dmod). Do a few creative things to make it fun*.
The good thing is that I'd say that you are already onto what matters most in making a dmod and that is that you want to tell a story that is important to you, even if it is just a great adventure you always wished you could have.
* You can add new graphics, new sound effects, clever plot twists, new MIDI music, or just try something new in the way of DinkC coding.
