I tried fallout 1, and I can say I'd rather play Fallout 3. I think it got a lot of shit just because of the sudden change in gameplay.
Fallout 1 has aged quite badly. I've gone back to it a few times over the years, and I could swear the interface's gotten more jarring every time. If you stick with it, though, the game's still got one of the best stories and atmosphere in any RPG.
