Fidonet was the first effective email system that I encountered, though it took a couple days to pass through the BBS uploads each day, it was still faster than snail mail. It is worth mentioning that a lot of people on the internet at that time were upgrading to 9600bps, many were still using 1200, and the Amiga still represented 1/3 of all internet identities.
Interestingly, they had only 2 rules which even now seem to make a lot of sense.
