I don't particularly like Steam, but Gaben has apparently stated that if they ever go down, they'll release some sort of "master key" allowing everyone to keep their games.

Well actually the wankers who run GOG roam around the internet sending c&d notices to abandonware sites so that they can sell the games on their site instead. They actually contact the rights holders (who usually have absolutely nothing to do with the game and generally don't care) and set up digital distribution deals with them, which usually involves nothing other than putting it in a DOSBox installer bundle. They've caused numerous legal issues for abandonware sites with some of them being forced to close down.

The only good thing about GOG is that their installers are DRM-free so you can simply torrent them off of thepiratebay, which you ought to do instead of ever giving them a cent.
