About contests, I think those can still be done, but it's a bit of a gamble each time. I wasn't perfectly happy with the last one - I originally wanted to have some kind of prize for the winner that would be cool enough to lure people into participating, but we couldn't really come up with anything in a timely fashion.
Maybe a really simple contest that doesn't require a lot of work, like a weekend dmod contest (a la Ludum Dare, which I've always liked), or something akin the 1-screen dmod contest, which was quite neat. (Even if all the entries ended up being 'weird' type dmods)
As for the Quest for the Golden Nut, holy shoot! That dmod sounds a lot more awesome in writing, than it probably ever was in real game.
