Actually, I play Dink Smallwood using a Playstation 2 controller with an ancient USB adapter. So I think it isn't terribly picky
I've done the same, except I used a PS3 controller. Which is even easier since it comes with a USB cord, to begin with. I'd say, after having gotten used to the keyboard so well, it was harder to play with a controller.
