If it really does permanently mess up the hardness where you can't restart the program to fix it, then keep backups of the hard.dat handy (you really should backup your dmod now and then anyways, or it could go poof at the whim of an overstressed and under-payed hard drive). that way if your hard.dat gets corrupted you can just replace it with the backup copy.
