If you don't have an account, just leave the password field blank.
It's been a while since I played, but Hardcore isn't (or at least wasn't a while ago) really all that hardcore; if you die, you won't lose the character, it merely gets moved into the normal league. Hence, there isn't really any reason *not* to start in hardcore, though I guess it won't be for very long if you die a lot. 
Still, it does make you try that much harder to avoid the first death, and make the first death somewhat more impactful when you do die.
