Thankfully, my brain is rewritable.
@MsDink:
The on-screen help (the text at the bottom-left of the window) gives you most of what you need to know.
You select sprites by clicking them one by one, by Shift-dragging a box that touches them, or by Ctrl-Shift-dragging a box that contains them completely. You deselect everything by pressing C (as in [C]lear Selection). As of version 2.2 you can't deselect using a mouse-dragged rectangle. I might add something like that in the future. You pick up sprites by pressing P. You can put those down by clicking or pressing Enter. You can't stamp the sprites in multi-mode. If you specifically want to create a copy of the selected sprites, you can pick up a copy of them by pressing Shift-P. You delete sprites by selecting them and pressing Delete. You can't delete picked sprites. You can change some properties of the selected sprites by right-clicking (in 2.2, the Properties window doesn't exist in multi-mode). If the right-click menu shows a tick before "Hard", then all selected sprites are hard. If it shows a dot, then some of the selected sprites are hard, others are not. If it doesn't show any symbol, then none of those sprites are hard. Same thing for Nohit, Background, Foreground and Invisible (with the note that the last three are mutually exclusive for each sprite).

Oh my, that's an awfully long explanation!

@Bill:
I managed to find something that resembles your error. Do you have a "dink" folder in your installation dir? The editor uses Dink_Install_Dir\dink\Tiles\S06.bmp (and S07, S12, S13) for displaying the little cells of the minimap (the purple and red boxes etc.).
