The thought of replacing our array of emoticons with more Dinky emoticons has actually crossed my mind before.
As Abs pointed out, the problem is that we need redink1 or Tal to change stuff like that. Redink1 has traditionally been pretty good at responding to emails though, so I wouldn't write it off as a complete impossibility.
If you wanted to make completely new emoticons, I can think of a few more problems with that... 1) it would be more trouble to implement, and 2) the emoticons should be generally useful for emoting something.
