I called them noobs because this question seems to be asked every few months and always gets the same answer.
The conclusion is that if you're going to upload a file, it should be for everyone to enjoy. Not to gain some imaginary prize and a little picture next to your name.
But yes you're right. Not having an awards system puts everyone on a level playing field (for the most part) which means everyone is treated the same.
