There's certainly a fair amount of bullshoot involved... Having to be online to play a single player game? Total bullshoot. (Although, as people have said, the games you mentioned should be playable offline)
Online authentication? Also bullshoot. What If I want to install the game on a computer that doesn't have an internet connection? Well, I just download a crack that lets me do just that, which is coincidentally what every pirate downloading the game illegally use anyway.
Bullying the customer to the point of having to use a crack just makes one wonder why you bothered to pay for the thing in the first place.
