What I see in this thread are two different questions being asked. Firstly whether or not there is life outside the earth's immediate vicinity. And secondly whether or not there has been intelligent alien life visiting us.

The answer on the first question ranges from almost certain to completely impossible depending on who you ask. This is because we're basically doing a wild guess and then analyze it. There's nothing wrong with analysis by itself, but without proper statistics we just need to guess how likely life is to have evolved. Equations such as the Drake equation aren't really that useful since you'll have to guess most parameters. Personally I'm somewhere in between, there could be extraterrestrial life, there could be not. It wouldn't really make a difference to me anyway, I don't see why the risk of getting annihilated by aliens is much greater now than it was, say a thousand years ago. And it doesn't help me with the ladies either.
