To get your own custom avatar you need to earn the blessing of the Walma Spirit. They need to be custom d-mod graphics, but the final decision is his and his alone.
You need to remember that only 4 (Not sure on this... SimonK, Striker, Carrie and Okaly-D-Dude?) people have ever been granted a custom avatar. It's not very common.
