There's a secret corridor somewhere near where you fight him... As far as I remember, though, the treasure wasn't really worth crap. 
Would have to be pretty cool to make up for being found 5 minutes before the game ends.
It's not really about how difficult the fight was, he just felt like a lamer rehash of the last boss in BOF1 to me. If you played the second game first, though, I can see why your preference would go that way.
PS. I'll take this opportunity to shout my appreciation for Ex-Death in FFV. He was treely awesome.
