If you're playing the orignal game, maybe it's south of the blocked path. A hole in the ground surrounded by poles with snakes on them. I think. Try there anyway, it's a great place to power up.

Try going away from town south and west on the road. When you get to where the road is blocked go back a few screens then start looking around south of there. It's a small hill with a hole in the ground and poles with snakes aroung it. The blocked road is the one that goes toward the gob

Follow the road to the south and when it turns left go further south. It's 1-2 screens below.
