Why do we need the .doc and .xls formats? Couldn't microsoft put together a word processor or a spreadsheet editor that worked in a nice format like html?

In Office 2003, there are you can save Word and Excel files as XML files. XML is sort of like HTML, but more versatile.

Joyous. I should try that. Conversions from excel to html and vice versa, although functional, look pretty bad sometimes.
