Using Soundfonts for "realistic" MIDI music
After what i've said in DFArc3 news post. I think i should tell ya guys about some stuff. You see there is a lot of programs for Windows that is dedicated to use soundfonts for the MIDI in order to represent a music style such as SNES, orchestral, metal, NES etc. but keep in mind that they may sound differently depending on the instruments that was used in MIDI. Now let me present you some programs and the short description.
BASSMIDI- Very easy to use and set it up, you can select two MIDI Mappers where each one uses some soundfonts that you have chosen to use.
Timidity++ Win32 - Requires editing the timidity.cfg file that is found in freepats folder. Not only you can add soundfonts but also PAT files, so you can emulate the bloody Gravis Ultrasound! Best part about it is the fact that it comes with the MIDI Player that uses the CFG file you have edited, along with converting the MIDI into multiple formats.
Fuildsynth - Not much i can say about it, since i've never used it, but one thing for sure, it hogs the CPU like mad.
Soundfonts:
WeedsGM3
Setzer's SPC Soundfont (SNES music)
SGM V.2.01, GeneralUser GS FuildSynth
GMR Basico
You may encounter soundfonts that are in SFPack format. You need sfArk to uncompress it into SF2 format.
If any of these programs don't have the option to change the MIDI Mapper. Use Putzlowitsch's MIDI Mapper to change it. If it does not appear in Control panel if ya followed the installation instruction, just run the file.
NOTE: They do not work with the 64 bit version of FreeDink.
IF you have any question, go ahead and ask.

Personally I prefer BASSMIDI with one of these soundfonts on Windows because it does all of this stuff automatically. Even the AWE32 collection sounds better than the standard GS SW synth. It's also a good idea for MIDI composing because it doesn't lag as much.
It seems to work fine with 64-bit Freedink as well.
