Just started on Battle Royale, the original book (well, translated to English), and man is it awesome!

It seems to be a lot more like the manga than the movie, which misses out on a lot of story, and several of the characters are quite different. However, I really enjoyed the movie adaptation's version of the teacher, "Kitano-sensei," and besides that it's worth watching (for those of you who haven't).

Hm, I wonder who would be the last man standing if the DN held a battle royale?

For those interested, though, if you like manga I'd suggest reading it (mainly because it's free and easy to find online, though I should warn of the childish illustrations of the characters, a strong contrast to the sinister atmosphere of the story), unless you have access to a copy of the novel you can read, or if you don't mind spending money on awesome books. In any case, if you liked the movie, read the book!

I remember reading the manga a looong time ago (during my Japanophilia phase which, I am glad to say, passed many years ago already ). I didn't even know it's originally a book; it does sound like something that might well work better as a novel, though.

So is it a book, a manga or a movie? All three?

Yup, it's all three, but I think I prefer the book.
As for "Japanophilia," there's still good manga out there, no matter what age group you're in,,,I just avoid the bad ones.
