I'm coming to the conclusion that this might be my favourite game of all time. I've barely scratched the surface of the game, 11 hours on the clock and I haven't rung the first bell yet, but it's a gameworld better than any other I've ever seen. Unbelievable design.

Anyone else playing it?

Not yet.
Everyone who played it loves it though.

Life? What's that? Can I download it?!
I'm not going to post a LMGTFY-link. Google "Dark Souls".

Looks interesting, but I can name a better game. Nier

There are two versions of Nier, Gestalt and Replicant. Gestalt is for the 360, whilst Replicant is for the PS3. Gestalt has the main character, Nier, as the father of Yonah, while Replicant has Nier as her brother. I've played Gestalt almost all of the way through all of its many endings, but had lost all of my progress due to an idiot.

I have played Nier. There is not a single thing better than Dark Souls in that game.

Not a single thing.

I liked Nier, but it was massively flawed and not in the same league to be honest. Very badly put together game, despite some nice ideas.

Though I didn't like the gameplay, I loved the music and the storyline. Kaine was my favorite character. So, SabreTrout, how many endings did you do? You do know that once you go through the credits you get a new game+ and start around the middle of the game. (You can actually read what the Shades are saying!)

Let us save our effort and just lie down and die.
Sounds like a turd of a game to me. I love the dark themes, but I just don't have time or patience to be dying every two minutes. Regarding Nier hehe

I didn't get anywhere close to finishing Nier. Looked like there was going to be too much fetch-questery and the multitude of flaws stopped me going back to it. Once it came out the 360 it never went back in. Arik completed it though so I know about NG+.

I've barely scratched the surface of this game - only 11 hours played and I haven't even rung the first bell yet - but the sense of exploration and wonder is second to none. I can't think of a game that's drawn me into its world so fully since the Baldur's Gate series. Much like those games, I've gone into this extremely cold and discovering things for myself has been a joy. You feel like you are the first person to set foot in these environs, the first person to come across these enemies, the first person to find these items. It's a masterpiece in worldbuilding.

The online aspect is wonderful, even excluding the slightly dysfunctional summoning/invading aspects. Seeing ghosts fade in and out of your world is a fantastic touch, as is seeing the more fully-formed warriors setting off on their quests from Firelink. There are a multitude of other touches too and it's the most inventive use of online I can remember and it adds to the experience brilliantly.

The difficulty is punishing but never feels unfair. Enemies that were giving you great trouble when they were unknown quantities soon start getting cut to shreds once you learn how to combat them. Most deaths come down to your own impatience rather than unfair opponents. It's also the first game I've ever played that truly makes you feel like a small guy taking down a giant demon - You're so outmatched in most areas but can always triumph with knowledge, patience and the HEART OF A DEMON SLAYER!

Love! True love!
I think I had that once.

Anyway, I've been checking this game out since you recommended it so highly. I'm thinking about getting it, but the one thing people have been mentioning is that it's super-giga-drill-breaker hard. I know you said it gets easier once you learn how to combat them, but is it really that bad anyway?

@Schnapper: While I think the guy was a bit too harsh of the storyline, he was right about almost everything else. Nier will always be a good game in my heart and well worth the playthrough at least once.
