I'd really like to sell it if I don't need it any longer.

I honestly just can't remember, but knowing SoB, how clever it is and how it works, you should keep it. The game may require it later on. Although, if the game gives you an option to sell it, then it will most likely give you an alternate way if you need it in the future. But the alternate way is probably more harder, so I'd keep it for now.

Can someone please remember if the Hammer is needed later in the game? Empty slots in the backpack are precious. I've seen options to sell, but so far have declined.

ahhh not to worry..you lose everything, and I mean 'everything' at the start of Story 4.
