So, the psychic powers topic got me thinking about weird stuff that has happened to me, and that ultimately led to 'ghosts'. I'm not even sure I believe in them, but some pretty weird stuff has happened which I can't explain. However, I'm pretty sceptical...

So here goes:
What is the definition of a ghost to you (an unseen force, a white man-like figure rattling chains, a see-through headless duck?), and do you believe in a ghostlike afterlife in any kind of way? Who has had some weird experience they relate to ghosts?

However, I'm not a huge believer of ghosts.

Ghost is a word created by the English Language and is used as a noun.

I believe my grandpa is a ghost. Or atleast he was in the past. It was weird, the night after he was buried a small figurine on top of the sofa he used to sleep fell down. Other things fell off walls, aswell, in the next coming days. You could hear knocks on one of the windows even if there wasn't anyone, and also footsteps from upstairs. Many say the footsteps were just made up by my grandmom, but I was once there when it happened. The radio also turned on itself a couple of times (I was there also back then). But none of those things happen anymore, so I believe he "found the light", like Krisknox said.

All these things seem scary and quite possible, since my grandpa died very... differently.

I thought about this for a while and came to the conclusion that I don't really know what ghosts are. Some traits that I think most have.

- They have a soul, or a part thereof.
- They used to be alive, and now they are some sort of 'reflection' of their former self.
- They only contain a small portion of their former self, meaning they have just one or two emotions and a simple goal. Probably something they feel wasn't finished when they died.
- They can somehow be detected by humans
- Humans are afraid of them, so I suppose they have some kind of power as well. Maybe only the power to keep us awake, but some power nonetheless.

I don't think I ever saw a ghost, was a ghost or will be a ghost though. Still can provide good basis for a story.

Ghosts are ethereal creatures brought into existence as a result of a persons inner turbulence or torment. Ghosts often are expressed as the dead, because the mind goes through the most turmoil during the death of another being. Even if you are not consciously aware of someone dying, you may experience ghosts solely because you are confused, lost or afraid - the ghosts are reificated. They are tangible representations of struggles that you or someone within your' sphere of influence may be experiencing.

Skull, your story seems familiar with some things I've encountered. I sometimes believe my grandmother is a 'ghost' (though I don't like the word much, reminds me of scary movies about dead people with evil faces). Sometimes I feel like there's this weird presence in the room with me which wasn't there a few minutes ago, but then again, that can simply be my imagination.
She didn't die is an unusual way, but she did die very suddenly.

We had this tiny teddy bear which would say 'I love you!' when you prodded its tummy. The thing hadn't worked for ages anymore, but suddenly it had the weird habit of going off in the middle of the night! And then, when we tried to make it 'talk' by pushing the tummy several times, nothing happened... After a while I was pretty freaked out by it, but didn't dare to throw it away, since I've seen too many bad movies with ghosts coming back to haunt you in terrible ways, and I didn't want to upset the 'ghost', whoever it was. Then I had this weird dream in which I pleaded to my grandmother to stop this tiny bear from talking, and after that, it never made another sound... True story!

Also, Chris claims the playstation had turned on by itself once, which would, again, freak me out. Brrr...

And at night we can hear a very loud sound from the ceiling (we don't have an attic), like some kind of animal which is running over it... Maybe it's a cat running over the rooftop, but it sounds as though it's running right above our bedroom ceiling, and there's no way there's a cat there. But I don't think this can have anything to do with ghosts, unless my granny is a cat

When I go to bed at night I usually put my computer in sleep mode so I don't have to boot it up each time I wanna use the computer. When I just lie calmly in my bed thinking about random stuff my computer turns itself on. It has happened twice so far, but my guess is that it's something with the electronics to do rather than a ghost clicking on my power-up button

I'm not sure if people are afraid of ghosts because they hold some kind of power, but more because they're afraid of things they can't explain, especially if these things happen under your very nose.

The movie industry of course plays into that fear, because I can't imagine anything more scary than an evil entity which you cannot kill, but is dead set on killing you, which I doubt is many a ghost's plan.

My DVD player and PS3 turn themself on every now and then (especially when it's night) but I think the DVD player just makes some kind of "Updates" since it shuts down immediately after a few beebs, and even the lightest wind could set PS3 on if you forget to shut it from the back.

Well, presences can be explained easily, you might have some Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs) in certain rooms, but if not, then something is really weird.
You also could buy an Analog camcorder with an infrared attachment and a digital camera to take ictures and film the house. that way you can easily pick up any strange anomalies.
And last you could buy a digital recorder (or borrow one) and try to catch Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) of the ghost. That's what i'd do to prove that there is or is not a ghost. It'd also be fun!

but i for one dont believe in ghosts or hell, not even an after life.

I don't believe in ghosts. But somehow, I think it would be nice if they did exist, even if they have completely zero way to make us notice them. One can think of ghosts as an existence on another plane, so that could make them anything... Dead, alien or even completely natural.

Nah, don't think that idea will do me much good. Once those pics or the camcorder would actually show something, I'm sure I won't be able to sleep at night. Ever again.

I'll just try to ignore any weird signals, and keep convincing myself that there's no such thing as ghosts, which probably (and, for me, preferably) is the truth anyway.

Well, if I died, I'd try to put on my consoles and continue gaming too! Gaming for life...and death!!

Somehow I don't feel it's any more plausible for demons to exist than ghosts...
