The Tragic Death of Zink Smallwood is Tim Maurer's second D-Mod still available on TDN. It is a clear improvement from The End of the World, though it might still not worth playing.
Story
Dink receives a letter from a mysterious individual named Zink, asking him to meet. He meets with him, and Zink (who looks exactly like Dink) explains he's actually his long lost brother. Meanwhile, an evil wizard robs a bank, then tries to kill Dink. But he mistakingly kills Zink instead. Dink sets out on a mission to avenge Zink and stop the evil wizard. The story itself sounds quite silly, but it'd actually fit for a game like Dink, if it were to explore the subject in a comedic way. Unfortunately, this is not the case here.
Mapping
It's better then the weird attempts from the End of the World. Generally, I'd still consider it below average. Most maps are either kind of empty, or have strange visual anomalies and design choices. Like the pine trees on a certain screen. There are some hardness errors too, but they're not game-breaking.
Gameplay
Your quests mostly involve fetching an item, and talking to NPCs. My problem with this is that they feel like the bones are there, but there's no meat to them. They're inoffensive, but uninteresting. The characters are uninteresting too.
Bugs & other stuff
Aside from the visual problems, there's the strange choice to use Dink's yellow text for the dialogue of many characters. It was likely done to cut some corners, but it sure stands out. Also, you start with very high stats (100+) - I don't know if this is a bug, or simply the case of outdated code no longer supported by modern Dink. But it makes combat trivial. It appears that Tim also wasn't that advanced with DinkC at the time when making the D-Mod. Characters just disappearing without any effects applied, and lack of animation on certain characters are sings of that. But I don't think I'd be fair to judge that part. There was also game-breaking bug, but Robj helped me out with a fix for that script. I hope the D-Mod gets updated with that, so it'll be at least playable from start to finish.
Overall
TBH, I can't say this D-Mod is bad. But I also can't say it's worth playing. It's biggest problem I think is that it's just boring. It's inoffensive, but doesn't really offer anything. It's just okay. Is it worth playing? IMO, there are other average D-Mods that, while not good, at least have something interesting going for them. So I can't really see any reason to play this beyond historical curiosity.
