From the ashes of Dink World...
Posted by Tal on Wednesday April 3rd, at 04:54 PM
Yes, believe it or not, I'm a member of the Dink Network now. After I had announced the closing of Dink World, redink1 offered me a chance to do Ask Tal on the DN. And as I like to think, when opportunity knocks, answer the danged door. Who wouldn't accept the title of Dink Network Staff Member?

As for Ask Tal, it will arrive in short order, and will kick more butt than a football player in a room full of nerds who don't deserve his wrath. Poor lil' boys. Just you wait.

E-mail scams. Virus warning
Posted by WC on Thursday April 4th, at 01:57 PM
I'm not sure how many people have become the victim of this, but recently a lot of weird e-mails have been reaching dinkers from unknown senders. I have been victim twice, ex dinker Andy M. has gotten it twice, and RedInk received one. These e-mails look like either, someone you know from the Dink Network has sent you a piece of e-mail or, a returned e-mail (Mail delivery failed: returning message to sender). Now, in order to get a returned e-mail you must first send it, well, no one sends these e-mails, they are fake, and most of the times, the so called e-mail address 'you sent it to' (which you didn't) is fake. The other times, it looks like someone you know has sent you a e-mail. RedInk recently got one from a OLD e-mail which Gary does not use anymore, where these scammers are getting these e-mails are beyond me. The e-mail also has a file attached to them, this file is a virus (it appears to be a rather nasty worm), DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT! Please hatwcinfrcr@hotmail.com" target="_blank">let me know if you get one of these e-mails by forwarding it to me. I have traced the IP to London England, and I have been trying to get a hold of the ISP. I need these e-mails for proof once I get a hold of the ISP so we can see if the virus is sending these out it self or someone is sending them out of their own free will.

Thank you.

(P.S. A warm welcome to Tal, now will all the old DW members move over here? :] )

Awards: March 2002 DOTM
Posted by redink1 on Thursday April 4th, at 07:03 PM
You may now start voting for the March 2002 Download of the Month. Not many new files last month... hopefully this month shall turn out quite a bit better.

What is this Download of the Month, you may ask? Anyone with a Dink Network Account can cast their vote to help decide the 'Download of the Month' for the previous month. Voting lasts about 7 days, and usually starts on the 1st of the month. More information can be found on the Awards page.

New Add-On: Commando Duck
Posted by redink1 on Thursday April 4th, at 07:37 PM
Daniël Saffrie has released Commando Duck, which allows you to create ducks to do things for you, sorta like a puppy. You can order your ducks to wander, follow, freeze, and even explode. I bet your puppy never exploded when you told it to. Commanding ducks to explode sounds like loads of fun.

Virus Update
Posted by WC on Friday April 5th, at 02:45 PM
Someone, or some people either in the Dink Community, or previously involved in the Dink Community is infected with this worm that e-mails it's self (in several forms) to people in the users e-mail contact list. If you receive any e-mails the subject line "Mail delivery failed: returning message to sender" or any other e-mail with weird subject lines and a attached file, please, do not download and execute the file, instead, just forward it to me HATWCINFRCR@hotmail.com" target="_blank">PHATWCINFRCR@hotmail.com. I have compiled a list of contacts that are appearing in these files. If you notice that you have several or all of these names on your contact list please check your HD for viruses. UPDATE: After looking at the IP's in the e-mail, the user we suspected that was sending it was not. The IP's are spoofed.

New Add-On: Dink Grenade
Posted by redink1 on Saturday April 6th, at 11:23 PM
Ehasl has released Dink Grenade. What is it? I'm not sure... but I think Dink gets to use a Grenade of some sort

New D-Mod: Adolph Blaine Charles Dink
Posted by redink1 on Saturday April 6th, at 11:28 PM
Ehasl has released a new D-Mod, Adolph Blaine Charles Dink. What does it entail, you may inquire? Well, it resembles Dink Letterman quite a bit.

New D-Mod: Kill the Hippies
Posted by redink1 on Saturday April 6th, at 11:32 PM
Joshriot has released a new D-Mod by the name of Kill the Hippies. And you kill a lot of hippies. Its somewhat similar to a multi-screen Fairy Goodness, except you get better weapons in Kill the Hippies, and it has some humorous moments.

Recondite Eight: Resurrection
Posted by redink1 on Sunday April 7th, at 12:11 AM
Wow... there wasn't a single Recondite in the month of March at all. I'm not sure why either...

In any case, to read the rest of the Recondite, view the comments. Recondite is a (usually) weekly column of sorts... that discusses anything that I feel like.

New D-Mod: Once in a Lifetime
Posted by redink1 on Monday April 8th, at 07:36 AM
Simeon has just let loose Once in a Lifetime, a new D-Mod. The king asks Dink to visit a part of his kingdom to see what's going on there. However, the only way to get there is by boat. Dink's boat sunk and he washes ashore somewhere...

New D-Mod: Milderr!! 3: End of Questing
Posted by redink1 on Monday April 8th, at 07:38 AM
Sharp just sent me Milderr!! 3: End of Questing, and forced me to play it. I played it for about 10 minutes, and found it to be pretty good up until I got stuck (but I didn't spend too long trying to get un-stuck either It is pretty fun being Milder, an evil-ish protagonist...

Good bye for now.

After months of pain, I will finally go in for surgery on the unknown type of tumor in my spine. All the tests done came out unconclusive and the doctors don't know what this is, and have never seen anything like it before. Thursday will be my last day in school, and Sunday I will go into the hospital to be prepped for surgery. I'm not sure when I’ll be back, but I would like to say Thanks for everyone in the community who has supported me these last few months, and thanks to all the people I've gotten to know who have become good friends of mine. I wish you all the best of luck, and see you later.

P.S. Since RedInk was a scum bag on links this week, here is a added bonus link!

New Mac Operating System for PC!

Site Updates: New Icons
Posted by redink1 on Thursday April 11th, at 01:56 PM
Since quite a few people like to have those loony wizard icons for their user accounts, I thought I might expand their options. So now you can have a green wizard or a blue wizard. This should have been implemented since the beginning, I somehow forgot to. Updated: and thanks for dinkmega for suggesting icons for slayers... I can't believe I neglected the poor green terrors.

Also, the dead dink from Back From the Grave is now a selectable icon.

If you can think of any other Dink-related characters/locations we can use for icons, post a comment.

Ted Shutes Strikes Again
Posted by redink1 on Thursday April 11th, at 05:36 PM
Ted Shutes has released two new modifications to pre-existing D-Mods.

In his 9 Gems of Life 2 Modification, he fixes several problems with the game crashing. Good.

And in his Friends Beyond 3: Legend of Tenjin Modification he has cleaned up 'scores of bugs' and added several new features. Cool.

So now the question... should we start calling these things D-Mod-Mods?

Discussion Nine : Hard, harder, hardest!
Posted by Kyle on Sunday April 14th, at 10:09 AM
It's finally time for a new discussion, mostly because Arik posted a nice new idea on the board. I quote :

"How hard do you like your bosses? Should they fall down at the first attempt? Should the final boss have you tearing your hair out as it steamrollers you for the 15th time? Do you want a real challenge, or do you just want to kill, kill, kill it straight off?"

... What are you waiting for?? Add your comment!

March 2002 DOTM Results: Ultimate Cheat v3.0
Posted by redink1 on Wednesday April 17th, at 04:02 PM
Congrats to Ted Shutes for winning the March 2002 DOTM for Ultimate Cheat v3.0. Tying for second place was None and Gorack, Umtar, and Shreik: The First Battle; each with 3 votes.

And today two (!) D-Mods were sent to me. And instead of being a turtle as I normally am (like with this DOTM announcement), I decided to upload them today. Well... Gamespy is in the middle of moving all of their servers a few miles, and apparently the server that I upload files to is not hooked up just yet. I will try to get the two D-Mods uploaded later today.

Site Updates: Rankings Page Up
Posted by redink1 on Wednesday April 17th, at 04:16 PM
Last Sunday I finished work on the Rankings page... and it seems to be going well. It is completely live (unlike the old Points system, where it was updated whenever I clicked a link). Post a comment to let me know if you want any other rankings listed (if any).

View the comments page for the Magic Formula that is used to formulate the Overall Rankings.

New D-Mod: Quest of Glandor Unfinished
Posted by redink1 on Wednesday April 17th, at 08:36 PM
John Hagen and Christiaan Janssen have released Quest of Glandor Unfinished. There isn't a lot to play (only three screens that I could see), but it includes quite a few midis and graphics that were going to be included with the final version. It also details the story they were going to follow. Unfortunatly, it will never be finished, and they release this in hope that someone else will finish it on their own.

New D-Mod: Cloud Castle
Posted by redink1 on Wednesday April 17th, at 08:39 PM
SabreTrout and Arik have released Cloud Castle. Apparently, some people are getting kidnapped, and Dink goes to Cloud Castle to get his answers. I played it for a few minutes and was impressed.

A new 'Feature'
Posted by WC on Thursday April 18th, at 12:05 AM
Before I leave I decided I'd better get this out to the public. As most of you remember i've been working on a quotes.txt file for around a month, and thanks to our fellow dinkers(mostly Tal, Nexis, and good old redink) I have compiled the quotes.txt. I'm sorta depressed at the size, so, after RedInk forced me, we have made it a 'feature' of The Dink Network. If you wish to add quotes to The Dink Network Quotes.txt, hatwcinfrcr@hotmail.com">e-mail me with quote said, who said it, and a contact of that person. Thanks, and on another note, you should all flame RedInk for making fun of me and how stupid I act on these pills, later.

Updated D-Mod: Quest of Glandor Unfinished
Posted by redink1 on Thursday April 18th, at 04:18 PM
Christiaan just sent me an updated version of Quest of Glandor Unfinished. It adds some things that were not in yesterday's version. It also has about 30 screens you can play through... not 3. I missed an exit when I tested it yesterday.

Updated D-Mod: Cloud Castle v1.001
Posted by redink1 on Thursday April 18th, at 04:20 PM
Arik sent me Cloud Castle v1.001, which I believe fixes a freeze bug and (possibly) some map bugs. Good.

Quotes.txt
Posted by WC on Thursday April 18th, at 09:15 PM
The Dink Network's Quotes.txt, if you find any funny quotes on our web site, or know any quotes said by active, well known dinkers, send them to me WC @ WC@dinksmallwood.net. Please include, quote said, who said it, and a contact of that person. Thank you and enjoy.

Updated D-Mod: Cloud Castle v1.1
Posted by redink1 on Friday April 19th, at 12:06 PM
Arik e-mailed by both the full version and the patch to Cloud Castle v1.1, which includes fixes for several more bugs.

Updated D-Mod: Once in a Lifetime v1.1
Posted by redink1 on Sunday April 21st, at 12:05 PM
Simeon sent me Once in a Lifetime v1.1, which "fixes some bugs and adds a few things: 57 screens, a minigame, a puzzle and more". I really enjoyed playing through Once in a Lifetime v1.0, although I felt it ended a bit too soon. v1.1 seems to fix that.

Discussion Ten : Help make tools that help
Posted by Kyle on Thursday April 25th, at 12:10 PM
In the tenth discussion we'll discuss what kind of features a good Dink C editor should have.

The topic was suggested to me by Phoenix, since he's very interested in knowing your wishes so he can improve his Dink C editor.

So people, what are you still doing here? Head on to the comments and help the guy out!

Updated D-Mod: Secret of Amehoela Gold
Posted by redink1 on Sunday April 28th, at 06:51 PM
Christiaan has released Secret of Amehoela Gold, an updated version of his second D-Mod. Unfortunatly, there didn't seem to be a list of changes... but from the dates, it looks like the map and a few scripts were modified.

On an unrelated note... I'm officially back on slow narrowband, so I'm rarely on the internet at all. Right now I'm downloading what I assume to be Secret of Parizaya Gold... which I will hopefully have uploaded tomorrow.

Updated D-Mod: Secret of Parizaya Gold
Posted by redink1 on Monday April 29th, at 12:20 PM
Christiaan has released Secret of Parizaya Gold. Unfortunatly, like yesterday's release of Secret of Amehoela, there wasn't a list of fixes. Hopefully Christiaan will post a comment detailing what he changed/fixed since the last version.

Map update for Dink Smallwood.
Posted by WC on Monday April 29th, at 07:07 PM
I got off my lazy ass after getting home from surgery, and I created (here come the drmatic enterance) WC's Dink Smallwood Map Update 1.0. All I did is edited the main dink smallwood map, made is smaller, and got rid some hardness bugs and such. If you notice any other bugs, please HATWCINFRCR@hotmail.com" target="_blank">e-mail me and I will fix them in the next update.
