The Game

Dink Smallwood is a lite RPG. Imagine a cross between such classics as Zelda, Diablo, and Monkey Island (with a tiny dash of South Park) and you'll have a good idea of what to expect from the game.

It is also freeware, so you can download the whole game for free. If that wasn't enough, some people have made new adventures for the game, called D-Mods. There are tools to create your own adventures included in the download, as well as other user-created tools you can download here.

History

Dink was developed during 1997 by RTSoft, consisting of Seth Robinson, Justin Martin, and Greg Smith. After a little problem (they accepted pre-orders and missed several promised release dates) Dink Smallwood was shipped out to gamers across the United States during January 1998. However, due to a European publisher (Iridion Interactive), the game was only sent to stores in Europe. However, Non-European gamers could still purchase the game through mail directly from RTSoft for the low price of $25 (including shipping).

Dink was never a huge hit, but did reasonably well. During the summer of 1999, RTSoft had sold out of all of their copies of Dink Smallwood. There was a bit of anxiety, as Seth said there wasn't any plans on publishing any more copies. But he had a plan, and released the entire game as Freeware within a couple months.

This Site

This web site was born in late August of 1998. Back then, there were a lot of Dink Smallwood news sites (including Smokin E's Dink Smallwood Page, The Dink Smallweb, The Dink Darkwoods, and many many more). I recognized this, and decided that my Dink Smallwood page would not focus on news and file storage, but instead focus on my own personal projects. I was nearly done with finishing my first D-Mod (Lost in Dink v1.0), and so Redink1's Smallnet was born.

My once personal D-Mod site turned into a news and file site in short order. I can't remember exactly why or how, but it did. However, within 6 months, every other Dink Smallwood news site was dead or dying. Most of the old web sites were created by people who bought Dink Smallwood right away, and they got tired of maintaining a web site after a while. So now Redink1's Smallnet was the primary place to find news and files for Dink Smallwood.

I realized that my web site had expanded greatly, and I thought it might help if I bring other people into helping maintain at least the news. And so in June of 1999, The Dink Network rose out of the ashes of Redink1's Smallnet.

I was ready to leave my site. I figured that somebody else on The Dink Network staff could take over. But then Dink Smallwood Freeware was released, and nobody else really seemed interested in maintaining the site.

Things were pretty much static from then up to today. After quite a few server and design changes, The Dink Network is still maintained primarily by myself. There are helpers though (Kyle maintains the Timeline, WC... uh... posts news occasionally and backs up the files, and Dukie... well... he works quite a bit, and is the Secondary Webmaster in case I die or have amnesia).

Best viewed in Internet Explorer 4.0+, Netscape 6.0+, or Mozilla 1.0+ at 800x600 or greater resolution.
