The Dink Network

"Unknown" things about Lost in Dink

Guess what, the first title of Lost in Dink was "Unknown"!

Yep, that's what it was originally.  A D-Mod called Unknown.  That is why the people in the bar in Boot don't know Dink, and Dink says to the farmer "Everybody else around here treats me like an unknown."  So why was it changed?  When I submitted the timeline info to Mike Snyder, he took it that I hadn't decided a title for it yet.  So, not wanting to confuse the whole Dinkiverse or create chaos, I changed the name to Lost in Dink (after I saw a preview for Lost in Space).

Guess who the main badguy in Unkno... err, Lost in Dink was originally.   Hembar!

This was also corrected from the e-mail Mike replied to my timeline submission.  I knew I heard the name somewhere :-)  So, in a quick 5 minutes, I changed every reference from Hembar to the Really Evil Bonca.

Did you know that the trees talk?

Right outside the bar in Boot, there is a pine tree, as there is in the first screen in Jight.  They tell you what town you are in.  There is also a dead tree in the first screen of Sith that tells you that you are in Sith.

Guess what my First D-Mod was going to be... The Quest of Alleria!

In case you don't know, Alleria is a WarCraft II character (in BTDP), and I was going to have it so you played her.  I even drew out a map and everything.  I had planned on creating the graphics... but as I learned with Doom, creating good graphics is a near impossibility, unless a million hours are planned on doing it (especially when you don't have any tools).  I was going to have the characters be the same proportion as the ones from the original Dink were, so they actually looked like people.  I did start on a few screens, but then stopped, realizing that the graphics would be an impossibility.  I then started a new D-Mod, which I had no idea what it was going to be about, and started some fences, and Lost in Dink was born!  The WarCraft II based D-Mod idea was then put into Lost in Dink 2.0 and higher, with the input of DinkCraft.   And then DinkCraft betas 1 & 2 were released, and Alliance Command you can download.

Want to know what some people said?

I've kept every single e-mail that was sent to me regarding Dink (except the ones that also included files, like when people e-mailed me D-Mods).  So below are some of the e-mails I received regarding Lost in Dink.  Sometimes below each e-mail is some of my comments in italics.  I also blanked out the e-mail addresses of the people who were not really active in the Dink scene, to lessen harassment.

Well Dinkopolis takes place right after the original Adventure... and
Hembar is alive for years to come, so that would kinda not work to kill
him years earlier than a point where he's still alive...

Hi,

Did you get my reply on your plotline for the chonography? I can add the
2nd one, but the "unknown" one conflicts with existing plots. Did you
want me to add the 2nd one?
Mike.

This is the e-mail that prompted the name change from Unknown to Lost in Dink.

Your latest dmod update still doesn't have the pathname info.  If you're
using winzip make sure to check the recurse folder box.

Anyways, I didn't see my web page on your site. I also don't think I saw
any of RTsoft's dmods but maybe you didn't upload them yet or don't plan
to.

Nice site by the way.  Pretty good dmod too. :)  I did notice a few
hardness bugs(one by the house with all the ducks next to it)  and the
game seems to freeze if you don't have enough money when you go to the
well.

Thanks,

Gary Hertel

Ok, cool.  I'll post the link to your dmod on my site.

By the way, my site's named the Dink Darkwoods, not the Dink Smallwoods.

Thanks,

I'm stuck in Lost in Dink.  I got the weird key for the door in the
Goblin Caves, but there's nothing in the room.  I found the secret room
with the sword and the magic boots, but if there are other secrets I
need to find, I can't find them.  Can you give me some hints?  Thanks.

This is the e-mail that made me realize that Lost in Dink v1.3 was unbeatable.  I was messing with visions, and I ended up 'visioning' the transporter from Boot to Jight, so you couldn't see it in the game.  Oops.

First.........thank you very much for providing the "fun"!!

Obviously I found Dink Craft (by getting necklace from Donna.....giving it
to Victoria in exchange for the rock.....showing the rock to Thok)......my
request now is to be led in the direction of the second d-mod in Kill The
Ducks.......I'm "still" looking but am currently stumped :-).  I beat the
game but haven't found the secret!

Again.......many thanks..........keep up the great work!! I'm on my way to
look for that "other" secret :-)!!

So......"all secrets are in their names" huh???!!!!!!! HMMMMMMMMMMM :-)
"Help"!!

FYI.......when in the dungeon.....if you talk to Bob everything locks up and
you have to reboot.  Is this the "bug" you were talking about on your web

Wow....thanks for such a quick response!!  I'm a little confused
though........is there not another d-mod hidden somewhere in Kill the
Ducks??  It seems I've done all I can as I've finished the game without
coming across it.  If there is......please head me in its direction :-).  I
guess the sign "some are behind walls" isn't really a clue for the d-mod
either (but for the wall where the boots & sword are maybe?)
The hidden area above the castle was neat too :-).  I like your sense of
humor and imagination.

I hope you have as much fun making the d-mods as we do playing them!!  I for
one really do appreciate your efforts!!

I know exactly where you got that Mortal Combat music in "Lost in Dink".

It's called 'kombat.mid' and you got it from
'http://freespace.virgin.net/jeremy.m/'

Am I right? ~TJ~

He wasn't right.  I forgot where I got it from, but that wasn't the place.
