Actually, with ChickHEN, you can install custom firmware. I just did it on mine, and it worked like a charm!
Here are instructions.
Make sure you have the correct kind and motherboard like shown in the table on that page. They include an application that lets you check this after you have run ChickHEN. I just went from an official 3.90 firmware, upgraded to official 5.03 firmware, did the ChickHEN trick, (confirmed I had a legal type/motherboard combination) and ran Hellcat's Recovery Flasher, which allowed me to flash my firmware to 5.00 M33-4 (a custom firmware.)
Thanks for telling me about ChickHEN, Beuc! I was afraid I'd never be able to get my PSP over to custom firmware, but now, I have! I just turned my battery into a pandora one also.
