If you don't have an account, just leave the password field blank.
Private messages are possible. Simply make a new topic, and then select "Private Messages" as the category. Now you can type stuff there, and address it to a particular person, or to multiple people.

The chat link on top of the page? It's an IRC channel, but it dies every time we try to revive it. It just doesn't work for this community, I guess.
