This is very plain and obvious, have you even tried to figure it out on your own?
There is a village on the western portion of the island (south of where you landed), you go in the house and there is a chest. I'm sure you can handle the rest.

Did you say first church? I thought that was the second church you go to. You might have to go back to the place where you started and find the church there first.
