well the thing is... if the drive works in safe mode (plays dvd and whatnot) then the default basic windows drivers work for it, so thats why it seems like it's some kind of driver issue. If it didn't work even in safe mode then I would say it definitely is not a driver issue. So it is either the drivers or another program that is interfering with the drivers.
