hmmm... i'm still thinking it's a driver issue. I'd almost say try my suggestion again (it cant hurt)
1. go to device manager, select the drive by double-clicking on it, then select the driver tab and click uninstall to get rid of the drivers;
2. still in the device manager, select the drive by right-clicking and uninstall it as a device;
3. reboot, this should cause windows to detect the dvd drive as a new device and reinstall the drivers for it.
