True, England have been poor... but it's always the same. We never light up the group stages. Yet if we have one of the most talented teams in the tournament, and if people click, anything can happen.
The Germans are rubbish... but they are the Germans, when all is said and done. They thrive in major tournaments, and being the host nation, have a great advantage.
Whilst Ecuador have been quality, they don't have the experience of big tournaments, or the quality of player, to go any further than the quarter-finals. When your main striker is Delgado, your never going to go far!
If any "smaller" team is to cause a major upset at this tournament, it would have to be Ghana. Ecuador have qualified from a dire group (though they have looked good), wheras Ghana were unlucky against Italy, and comprehensively beat the Czechs (who are fantastic). They should baet the U.S nicely, and qualify for the next round.
