To revive the orginal topic, I've never heard of the mentos and cola method. I wonder if it would work better with plain soda water. That seems a little more powerful (based on how often it sprays all over just from opening the bottle).
But I've done it with dry ice and a number of times. It's without a doubt the best non-pyrotechnic way to make a really loud explosion. I don't throw it though -- that's too risky for my taste -- I just use enough dry ice that it blows up on its own. (So it's a time bomb instead of a grenade, if you will). So long as you do that (and put it somewhere it can't hurt anything) it's really pretty safe. Do expect alarmed neighbors to come out of their houses look around though...
Oh, and the there's no need to sacrifice cola, the dry ice is more than capable on it's own. You can just use water, in fact it's easiet if you put the dry ice in first.
So it goes like this:
1. Put dry ice in bottle. (1/4 full or so)
2. Add enough water to cover dry ice.
3. Screw on cap.
4. Stand back.
