: I wonder, will Dink still exist in 2 years or so? I certainly hope so, but I fear most Dinkers will go eventually and play some *cough cough* mrrwnd or something...

actually, i was going to post something about that, a little idea i had, but i decided not to. now you have provoked me, and i shall!! hah!! bear my wrath...

OK, first, you should all probably agree that as a general rule, gam,es which an be modded are more likely to survive the long run, because the players can continually create new content?? I mean, look at counter-strike, half life, diabilo etc. etc. etc.

Now, i would put dinks existence up untill this point down to that fact. i mean, how many dmods are there?? hundreds, at least. many have not been released, many have not even been finished, but the fact that it is possable to make them has undoubtedly helped dink to survive to this day and age. In some respects, it is a wonder it has survived. look at games such as baldugs gate, which even today attracts a huge following. there are many mods for that too, but there ya go.

Now, having said all that, i still think dink will have trouble in the next 5 years time. what could be done? IM no so HO, ther is one "cure" which may still work. it's quite simple, simply release teh source!! before anyone slams me , i would point to blender. the blender scene has been all but dead for a number of years. now it has been converted to an open source project, and all of a sudden it is slowly gaining popularity, because:

1.- it's free

2.- it is able to compete with products which cost tens of thousands of dollars!

So yeah, I'm running out of steme here, btu don't you think that if we had the source, we could improve dink to the point where we could continue to exist for years to come? i can think of many improvments i would make, such as 32 bit colour, larger map support, mp3 and ogg vorbis support, etc. etc. etc. And any fears that thgis would fragment the community are (i believe) unfounded. look at other projects. the few who do "fork" the code never tend to go far (with a few notable exceptions of *BSD). sooo... whaddya think?? we should storm seths abode, grab his computer, grap the source, and split....

(this is the bit where you flame me, remember?? you know who you are )
