Punk for the most part is dead, since it seems to have gotten progressively pussier, and most bands that are putting out albums are simply reliving their past glories. Indie rock isn't so much dead as it is going nowhere, since most of is just random mixes of disco, punk, Television (the band), Joy Division, Gang of Four, Pixies, and Sonic Youth. Sure, that is a pretty big list, but they usually "progress" by putting in more elements of the others.

Like I said before, hardcore-influenced metal really has the potential to be the great music of the decade. It has a large stable of excellent bands and they have differences between them, giving them potential similar to that of 80s punk bands (which was easily the best decade for the genre).
