In my opinion, it is worth it to download the patch. In addition to a torrent of bug fixes, many skill changes and difficulty adjustments are made, and a few new, interesting features are thrown in here and there.

Oh, and if you have standard Diablo 2 but not the Lord of Destruction expansion... wow. I highly, highly suggest acquiring the expansion. It makes the game insanely better.
