So it's been discovered now - The Sliding Tile puzzles (yes, plural) can be bypassed using the Wrench - Which break upon use but can be repaired later. Reading the notes in the next room simply eludes to it being possible.
For Linux users this might be the only option though, sadly, until we can work out what the problem is.
Edit: This Shortcut come at a cost.
