LOOK UPON MY DEFORMED FACE! 
I've found that FreeDinkEdit is much more temperamental about accepting certain keystrokes, particularly combinations, when compared to good old DinkEdit. I imagine it's got something to do with how SDL reads keystrokes, but on Windows at least I find sometimes I have to give it a few tries before it will do certain things.
