At the point you are at Magic, because you need, if memory serves, 4 points in it to progress through one part of the story. You might be able to find enough magic potions in the wild to make up for it, but that requires you to scrounge through the wilderness and find most of the secrets.
Other than that, I always put all level-up points on attack. Putting them on defence might make for an easier game overall, but I dislike the way defence affects gameplay. It makes combat more of a slog both by making killing enemies take longer, and by lowering the stakes because even when an enemy does hit you, it doesn't do much damage.
