There is a problem though. It's the engine of the game itself. You see, we are living in times where people buy original old games and play mods with the source port of the game for expanded gameplay. But once they learn that Dink Smallwood doesn't have that. They will barely play it only out of curiosity.

Look at Doom, ZDoom basically expanded the game itself more than DEhackED due to the fact they have the ability to put HEXEN elements into Doom or even Strife ones. GZDoom comes in, which adds OpenGL support allowing to do even more crazy things such as real 3D models instead of sprites, dynamic lighting and reflections.

Sure Dink Smallwood has a source port in a form of FreeDink, but that's only Dink Smallwood with modern PC/Linux/Mac support, Turbo key and other audio file support (While lacking some features of it such as the Tracker ones i've mentioned before)

We have a source code of Dink Smallwood or even FreeDink, why not just expand one of em to do more stuff that the original normally cannot do in any form.
