If you don't have an account, just leave the password field blank.
Other compatibility options that might help are the "reduced colour mode", and running the game in a 640x480 resolution. I'll say though, I've had similar problems with the palette screwing up in some old games, and never found any way to fix it. 
Err, not to be a downer or anything; the AOE series is still pretty popular, so other people are bound to have experienced the same issues and found ways to fix them.
