Story > Everything for me too IF the game actually relies on a narrative for the gameplay progress.

If I'm playing Mario Kart 8, there is no story necessary to push me into the next race. Same for many platforming games, etc... Basically, if there is a feeling that each gameplay segment is its own contained unit that can be "restarted" (usually levels, matches, races, online games, sims, ...) then a story isn't as important to me.

On the other hand, if a game puts forth a plot that drives the continuation of the gameplay segments, it better be good or I'll lose interest VERY quickly. And I'm pretty strict with this on a personal level. A good story is NOT find the 5 artifacts, enlist the help of 6 other races, pursue a character across each area only to just miss them each time, ... Those are stories in service of the gameplay and it's just shameful.
