The great days of the RTS are behind us. Back in the 90s an RTS was pretty much the most impressive type of game you could make. Right now that prize goes to 1st or 3rd person games, usually shooters. The audience has become smaller. Additionally RTS games (or pretty much any hardcore strategy games for that matter) are inherently unsuitable for console gaming, but that didn't stop people from trying. Only to find out that it indeed didn't work. That also really cuts down the available budgets.

But the real nail in the coffin is the lack of innovation. It is surprising how modern red alert still is, even though it was released two decades ago. Not all that much has changed since red alert. If I were to make a list of the greatest RTS games of all time it would probably consist mostly out of stuff from the late 90s and early 00s. There just haven't been enough really original RTS games.

I personally never played warcraft, so I can't judge it.
