I would like to point out that our sun is not nearly massive enough to go supernova when it dies. What is going to happen is that the sun is going to expand into a red giant when it gets ready to die, engulfing Mercury and Venus, and possibly Earth. And we'll likely either be spread out through the galaxy, or dead when this happens in 4.5 billion years.
