Santa Claus isn't a new invention. Sinterklaas is his most obvious influence, but there are other, much older ones. In Finland, we actually still call the figure "Yule Goat", a remnant of celebrations that were popular in the past. Some modern aspects of Santa Claus might have been invented or popularized by Coca Cola, I don't know... Sometimes old traditions are surprisingly new.
