I don't think demos are always a bad idea. I haven't decided whether or not I want to release a demo. I think if I were to release a demo, It'd be a small completable dungeon that highlights certain combat elements I've made. That way it doesn't spoil anything from the actual game, and as long as I make sure not to include more than 25% of the elements I should still have motivation to finish the real thing. Most demos I've played seem to just be ripped from the actual game, and I don't really like that.
