Hm. Can't answer to that but many games today have a difficulty setting that makes a game easier or harder. I've played CoD 4 on veteran or whatever it was called. Much more fun than normal. 
Games are different and Japan got those grindingly annoying games from the past that takes forever to 100%. But "US" games have their fair share of hard games too. I'mma brag about that I've 100%ed both Super Meat Boy and the Binding of Isaac.
