Never be afraid to ask, but don't demand an answer 
I like nethack. It's a console-based single-player[1] game, which obviously has terrible graphics (every "thing" is one character, your avatar is "@" for example). And there is no sound. But that doesn't matter; it has humor, and so much complexity and detail you wouldn't imagine from such a setting. It uses generated dungeons, so it's different every time, but the generators are really good so it isn't just randomness.

And best of all, game time only counts when you do things. You can take all the time you want to contemplate your next action, and the monsters will wait. You can even save the game and go to sleep. Which is a very good idea if you notice you're getting reckless; otherwise you'll soon be dead...

[1] It's called "nethack" because it was developed by people communicating over the internet, not because it's a networked game. Yes, it is so old that communicating over internet was something special.
