From what I've read about Therianthropy, It doesn't sound any stranger than any of the mainstream religions. I think the main reason someone might look down on a Therian is because their own belief system has been repeated to them so many more times that they conversely don't perceive their own religion as strange. To me, every religion that I know about I find to be strange (including atheism), but I understand why they are popular and I would be foolish to hold a grudge against anyone for simply having a religion.
The closest religious title you could pin on me would probably be "agnostic." Basically, I don't know nor claim to know what lies beyond the grave or what unknown things have happened in history. There could be a God, but maybe there isn't, or maybe there is a hundred and one God Dalmations. I simply don't know.
